Streamlining solid waste management in Ajmer with digital technology

With the rapid growth of the human population comes the creation of increasingly large amounts of trash and litter. Every city, country, and municipality is trying to keep up with this but is struggling. The solution to the problem lies in smart waste management. In this case study, we discuss how we transformed the waste management situation in Ajmer, India through our digital capabilities.

The Challenge

Currently, Ajmer has a population of 621,505 and is undergoing rapid development like many other Indian cities. An important aspect of urban and environmental welfare, solid waste management was thus subjected to great troubles by lack of attention and digitalization. A further roadblock to ensuring proper waste management was posed by the following serious challenges faced by the city:

  • Insufficient participation by households and organisations
  • Segregating waste at that source is not sufficiently understood and practiced
  • Challenges within ULB
  • Insufficient tools & modernized vehicles
  • Inadequate & inefficient communication
  • Vehicles and drivers cannot be tracked or monitored in real-time
  • Insufficient waste disposal facilities
  • Irregular & inefficient collection and transportation facility

The Solution

To transform Ajmer’s waste disposal, collection, and monitoring, we used our Smart Waste Management Solution Suite, which consists of the following components:

Web Portal

 

  • Monitors & tracks waste collectors’ vehicles to ensure all waste is collected and disposed off at the appropriate disposal facility on time
  • Optimizes waste collector routes to ensure longer routes are not taken and unnecessary multiple rounds are avoided which can conserve fuel and minimise the amount of time spent travelling
  • Maintains detailed records of the routes taken and areas visited by the waste collectors by route playback
  • Generates dynamic routes and BEAT plans so that the work of waste collectors can be distributed according to the changing needs
  • Provides insights that lead to better decision-making and performance analysis using the system for creating MIS Reports
  • Keeps track of the performance and activity of waste collectors with an asset management and monitoring system
  • Ensures that each household is regularly visited by the waste collectors by using a QR code-based garbage collection system for activity monitoring
  • Maintains a track of shifts, working hours, and leaves with the staff attendance module
  • Uses the resolution management module to track citizen complaints for faster resolution and transparent communication

App for Officials

 

  • Provides multi-tier access control and multiple user role support
  • Assesses citizen complaints about solid waste management to improve performance
  • Ensures a regular and robust remote inspection of garbage bins, toilets, and drains
  • Updates detailed information about shifts, attendance, and working hours of sanitization workers
  • Optimizes the planning and tracking of routes, resulting in increased productivity and better use of resources
  • Available in both English and Hindi for users who prefer one or the other

App for Citizens

 

  • Kachra Vahan/Auto Tipper Location updates about the arrival of waste collectors in the area
  • Allows to raise sweeping complaints about the work of sanitation workers or negligence in cleanliness, and other related issues
  • Both English and Hindi versions of the app are available so that users can choose what they prefer
